AVIATION DISPLAYS. IN: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF AVIATION PSYCHOLOGY
The paper has reviewed the many important issues that link the psychology of human perception and information processing to the human factors of aviation display design; and the focus has been almost exclusively on visual displays. Described are seven priciples of effective aviation display designs that include principles of: information need; legibility; display integration/proximity compatibility; pictorial realism; the moving part; predictive aiding; and discriminability: status versus command. As both new display technology evolves and changes in airspace structure and procedures change the pilot's tasks, the principles of human information processing that mediate between the display and the task will remain constant. Understanding of these principles and their applications to display design should support the designers' requirement to provide the pilot with continuous interpretable, reliable information.
