NEW ALTERNATIVE ROAD TYPES - SUMMARY OF PLAN-LEVEL REVIEWS OF ROAD TYPES

UUDET TIETYYPPIVAIHTOEHDOT - YHTEENVETO SUUNNITELMATASON TIETYYPPITARKASTELUISTA

This summary of new alternative road types contains experiences obtained from plan-level pilot sites and their continuation plans and implementation. Experiences obtained from other planning sites of new road types are also utilized. The objective of this summary is not so much to compare road types as to determine what factors have affected the suitability of the road type in each section of road (project) under study, and what needs to be taken into consideration when planning new road types. Another goal is to describe the basic characteristics of each road type. This summary is intended to be used as a basis for drawing conclusions and for compiling recommendations or guidelines for applying new road types. In the reviews new road types primarily refer to three-lane roads with or without median barriers, wide-lane roads and four-lane roads with median barriers. A two-lane road containing three-lane sections with a median barrier at regular intervals can also be considered a new type of main road. Correspondingly, conventional road types are two-lane roads, conventional limited-access highways and motorways. The cross section of a road with wide shoulders corresponds to that of a conventional limited-access highway, except that it is implemented as a road with mixed traffic and crossings.
