AIRPORTS: A GATEWAY CITY FACILITATOR

This paper defines the meaning of the term "gateway cities" and highlights the role airports play in shaping their modern variants. Gateway status was, and remains, a noteworthy recognition of importance for a given city. Many cities in relative proximity to one another are constantly trying to attain the status of gateway city. A discussion of the competitive factors affecting the formation of gateway cities is presented within the confines of airport and air carrier activities.
