BUCKLING OF COLUMNS WITH INTERMEDIATE ELASTIC RESTRAINT. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

A discussion of a prior paper with the aforementioned title by C.M. Wang and I.M. Nazmul, published in this journal (Volume 129, Number 2, February 2003), is presented. The original paper gave the classical flexural buckling solution to an ideal prismatic column with an intermediate lateral elastic restraint and subjected to a concentrated axial load at the top end only. The end conditions are ideal, and the discusser found the paper useful, particularly for testing a matrix solution proposed by the author that appears much more general and simpler to program. The discusser considers a stepped column that connects points A and B, consisting of 2 column segments AC and CB with semirigid connections at ends A and B and at the intermediate joint C. A general solution to the 2nd-order analysis and buckling load is offered, and closure is provided from the authors.
