THE USE OF CORAL ROCK AGGREGATES IN ROAD BASES, A LABORATORY INVESTIGATION USING FOAM BITUMEN

The road transport industry has been growing rapidly throughout Africa, and sources of high-grade roadbuilding materials are being exhausted in Tanzania. Soil improvement in roadbuilding is an appropriate solution for developing countries to deal with soaring costs and a scarcity of other materials. This paper summarizes preliminary and supplementary laboratory investigation carried out on the utilization of coral rock aggregates in foam bitumen stabilization in Tanzania. The use of coral stones in the base or surfacing could possibly provide a substantial savings in transport costs of aggregates, as normally used materials are not readily available in coastal regions of Africa. The laboratory tests indicate that bitumen stabilization is possible using coral stone aggregate mixed with some river sand.
