RELATIVE MERITS OF STEAM, ELECTRIC, AND DIESEL TRACTION

Comments by Mr. Harold Rudgard in a recent paper on railway motive power are summarized. The paper traces the history of mechanical traction from the latter half of the eighteenth century. There is reference to various major developments, with mention of steam-turbine locomotives, electric, diesel and diesel-electric traction, as well as light units and railcars, and the gas-turbine locomotive. Comment is made on the merits of the various forms of traction and conclusion is reached that looking at the problem of rail traction from a long term point of view the overall tendency is leading to nation-wide electrification in years to come.
