STREET PLAN AND INTERSTATE HIGHWAY EXPERIENCE IN ST. LOUIS
This article discusses highway and street planning in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1915, preparation was underway for a major street plan. The article discusses the design and financing of the early major street plan, which ended up including about 25% of the city streets. As of 1950, the traffic volume on city streets still continues to increase. At that point, a capital improvement plan was approved in St. Louis, to be used for widening the streets and adding more traffic lanes. The article also describes the interstate highway construction, variables regarding highway location, the expressways to be built, secondary streets, and lessons learned from the St. Louis experience.
