INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEMS AND THEIR ROLE IN THE ROAD NETWORK OF NORTHERN IRELAND
Northern Ireland is unique in the United Kingdom in that the Roads Service there is responsible for all classes of public roads throughout the Province. This avoids the institutional issues that arise when one authority is responsible for the trunk road network and another for the urban network and has allowed Road Services to develop an integrated strategy for the deployment of ITS. The author describes how over the last eight years, a significant investment has been made in ITS facilities and how this policy is being taken forward. (A)
