MAKING THE RIGHT CUT ON ATLANTIC CITY ROUTE : DESIGN-BUILD CONTRACTING TEAM TACKLES SLEW OF RISKY SITUATIONS TO BUILD TUNNEL-HIGHWAY SUCCESSFULLY

The $330 million Atlantic City-Brigantine Connector design-build project will provide a direct link to Atlantic City's Marina District for 17,000 vehicles a day. It also will serve as an emergency evacuation route for Brigantine Island via a 2,000-ft. cut and cover tunnel next to an existing canal. Power plants, rail tracks and hazardous waste sites were among the obstacles encountered. Giant jet grout columns allowed excavation without interior bracing. The tunnel avoids floating on the wet bottom soil by being weighted down by extra heavy bottom slabs. It's set to open in July 2001.
