LOVE AFFAIR WITH STREETCARS GOES ON
Toronto Transit has been able to trim its subsidy per rider to 35 cents and recovers 82% of costs from the farebox, an extremely high rate. Almost 90% of Toronto residents use the system. The first major subway line expansion in some time will add a grid component to the radial network. Streetcar improvements that are complete or underway include separate tram rights-of-way along busy routes to speed their trips. Streetcars are also expected to be a component in the planned waterfront redevelopment.
