BRIDGE APPROACH PERFORMANCE IN REVENUE SERVICE
This article presents a summary of the common degradation problems that are associated with bridge approaches and other track transitions, such as special trackwork, road crossing, slab track to ballasted track. It also looks at possible causes of track degradation and some remedies used in mitigating transition impacts. Methods for mitigating problems at transitions are summarized. These include dealing with issues related to differences in track stiffness, reducing the crushing and movement of ballast particles, accommodating the differential settlement between approach and bridge for ballast and foundation layer, and accommodating rotation and movement of bridge beam at transition movement. A summary is offered of railroad practices for improving track transition performance, categorized by the intended mitigation.
