THE NATURE OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AESTHETICS AND ERGONOMICS - IMPLICATIONS FOR THE DESIGN OF NAVIGATION SYSTEMS

The research reported in this paper was primarily involved with evaluation of the statement that "Good product aesthetics probably invoked good ergonomics" (Coates, 1997). Although believed to be bi-directional, we found that aesthetics impacted more on ergonomics than vice-versa. Coates' theories were applied to assess two navigation systems. Whilst the Citizen model attracted more attention to essential information for both mean fixation (3.25s) and total fixation (81.75% ), the VDO Dayton model attracted the greatest attention to discretionary information (20.61%). Significantly more attention was diverted to essential information (p=0.049) for both systems. Evaluation using semantic differential suggested that for future studies the scales are adapted for individual products or areas of research, as certain adjectives may not apply .
