DIAMOND - THE MULTIMEDIA ITS APPROACH OF THE FUTURE

{The DIAMOND system is the approach to deliver ITS applications via multimedia using DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) in combination with GSM and appropriate positioning technologies. The project is a partly EU funded project (2000-2001) which brings together 23 partners, representing the complete ITS delivery chain. The objective is to develop the technical as well as the business case. DAB is a standardised technology and the roll-out of DAB infrastructure means that there is an opportunity to deliver a wide range of ITS (Intelligent Transport Services) services, building on the positive results of on-going trials. DAB is particularly suited to ITS applications because it offers robust mobile reception, allows digital transmission such as audio, data, images and video. Vehicle manufacturers are now developing multimedia applications for future products. Furthermore, DAB technology and a range of DAB products are now available. The DIAMOND approach is divided into three modes: uni-directional services, bi-directional services and navigation based services. These services will be available for public as well as private transport. Intermodal services like park & ride, are also planned. To demonstrate the technical and commercial feasibility together with the benefits of the DAB-based added-value ITS services on the European scale four demonstration sites will be operational within the project's lifetime. Numerous commercial services and receivers will be introduced within the next three to five years (2003- 2005). A DIAMOND forum has been established to allow early and convenient access to the project results on the one hand and to prove the project results outside of the project on the other. The aim of the paper is to introduce the system rather than to explain the project itself. Cars can only be as intelligent as the information they receive so the most important task is to define a system that can deliver the (value added) services into the car.
