INNOVATIONS IN TECHNOLOGY LEADING TO AN INTELLIGENT SAFETY SYSTEM
Technology is changing at an increasing pace. Today many new technologies are available to support a truly 'Intelligent Safety System' in the near future. This paper gives an overview to underlying technologies such as Digital Signal Processing and Processors, semiconductor technology, wireless telecommunications and sensing technologies that will be used to add the intelligence needed. Using these basic technologies, the building blocks of the 'Intelligent Safety System' will be formed. These systems include: collision avoidance using advanced processing algorithms and sensors; driver warning from road conditions sensors, telematics and location (GPS) information; advanced crash sensing and algorithms for smart restraint deployment; emergency/SOS call and location systems; automatic warning to other drivers after an accident; and 'Black Box' data recording. As these systems and the interfaces between them advance we will see the truly 'Intelligent Safety System' take shape. For the covering abstract see ITRD E109346.
