BOATING WITH HISTORY: LEWIS AND CLARK

The Bicentennial Commemoration of the Lewis and Clark Expedition promises to be an exciting opportunity for boaters who wish to follow the water portions of the explorers' trail. However, the United States Coast Guard recognizes that there are many boating-related safety concerns surrounding the commemoration, including the types of vessels and number of users on busy waterways, the remoteness of much of the trail and the lack of effective communication systems, and who will respond if trouble does occur. This article discusses some of these concerns, and provides some guidelines that should help boaters make a safe trip.
