ACCIDENT PREVENTION: DON'T BOAT AND DRINK
This article discusses the legal regulations and consequences of boating under the influence (BUI). Federal standards of blood alcohol content for operators of recreational vessels are .08 for recreational vessels and .04 for all other vessels. The article addresses whether drinking is allowed on boats, what happens if the operator is stopped by the United States Coast Guard, and how the local police or marine patrol officers will be involved. Enforcement efforts serve two main purposes: (1) ensuring an intoxicated individual does not operate a vessel, in order to reduce the threat of harm to self and others; and (2) educating the recreational boating public on existing BUI regulations and requirements for safe boating.
