MARINE PATROL OFFICERS PLAY IMPORTANT ROLE IN BOATING SAFETY
This article describes the Marine Patrol Officers Course, which is hosted by the Coast Guard and specifically designed and tailored for state marine patrol officers. The course was first established in 1983 to train maritime law enforcement officers in the enforcement of boating safety laws and regulations. Since then, the target students and school's mission have changed. Employing a train-the-trainer philosophy, these changes included developing instructor skills with the goal of creating instructors of boating safety for their respective home states and individual agencies. The current curriculum includes core classes of instructor development, boating safety carriage requirements and boating-under-the-influence instruction, as well as classes in navigation rules, stolen vessel investigation and boating accident first-responder skills. The Coast Guard has often relied on representatives and instructors from other organizations to supply equipment and personnel. The current course is two weeks along, and the training can be put to immediate use. The course also offers an opportunity for networking among law enforcement officers and Coast Guard personnel.
