STRATEGIES TO SIMULATE DISCRETIONARY AIR TRAVEL: AN INTERNAL PERSPECTIVE
Recognizing the sharp decline in revenue combined with large increases in operational costs and the public's apprehension about air travel after the terrorist attacks of 2001, this article examines changing approaches used by the major domestic airlines in the United States to gain incremental revenue to price elastic market segments. The article provides a review of the evolution of strategic planning about the practice of offering steeply discounted airfares in both the regulated and deregulated environments. Also considered are some of the shifts in pricing practices that have culminated in the push toward offering discounts through the Internet and other nontraditional means.
