NEW SWEDISH PAVEMENT DESIGN MODEL
This paper describes the current development status of a new Swedish mechanistic road design model. This consists of a main model and nine sub-models which, in their final version, should be able to describe the longitudinal and transverse deterioration of the road in terms of bearing capacity, frost/thaw, moisture penetration, wear, friction, noise emission, vehicle-wheel-road, climate and adaptive design process. The sub-models have been developed in partnership between four institutes of technology and the national Road and Transport Research Institute, and work has begun on extending this collaboration to the international level. Implementation factors include the recently introduced Swedish code for road design, education of road design engineers, a system of performance values, a programme to introduce new methods and technology, and regional co-operation in a new research and innovation centre.
