THE COMPARABILITY OF NORDIC ABRASION TEST AND MICRO-DEVAL TEST

KUULAMYLLY- JA MICRO-DEVAL -KOKEIDEN TULOSTEN VASTAAVUUS

The aim of the study was to find out how well the results of the Nordic abrasion test and Micro-Deval test correspond with one another and to examine the impact the mineral aggregate's particle shape has on the abrasion values. 15 different rock types were selected for the study, 12 of which were screened into particle shape groups of "good" and "bad" aggregate. In addition to typical Finnish rocks, some rocks that had a low wear resistance, i.e. soap stone and three types of limestone, were selected for the study. All of the 27 aggregates were measured for a Nordic abrasion value, Micro-Deval coefficient, flakiness index and specific gravity. Six of the aggregates were also given a Micro-Deval test in dry conditions. According to the findings, the results of the Nordic abrasion test and the Micro-Deval test correlate strongly with one another. The coefficient of correlation (r) varies between 0.87 and 0.99, depending on the group of aggregates being studied. These results suggest that a Nordic abrasion test can, if necessary, be replaced with a Micro-Deval test when testing and classifying both mineral aggregates for asphalt surfaces and those for unbound courses.
