METHACRYLATE THIN BONDED OVERLAY SYSTEM FOR ORTHOTROPIC STEEL BRIDGE DECKS
Corrosion protection and non-skid wearing courses are both essential and basic requirements for the design of orthotropic steel decks. In most cases, an anti-corrosion coating (bituminous or reactive resin) underneath an asphalt wearing course has been used. Over the past 20 years, in Germany, thin bonded steel deck overlay systems were used on steel structures as alternatives to classical asphalt wearing courses on movable bridges, temporary bridges, pedestrian bridges, and areas adjacent to stationary bridges. This paper describes a methacrylate overlay system that conforms to German specifications for bonded steel deck overlays. Results of a special dynamic performance test are provided.
