FAILURE ANALYSIS OF THE HOAN BRIDGE FRACTURES
The northbound approach span of the Hoan Bridge on I-794 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, failed by brittle fracture on December 13, 2000. Two of 3 welded plate girders of the 66.45 m approach end span were fractured full depth leaving only 1 partially cracked girder supporting the span. The failure assessment is summarized.
