COMPARATIVE STUDY OF NCHRP REPORT 472 WITH THE CURRENT AASHTO SEISMIC SPECIFICATIONS
The recently published NCHRP Report 472 contains recommended major changes, some of which are likely to have an economic impact on the cost of bridges. This paper reviews the current (mandatory) and future (proposed) specifications. Differences in currently used AASHTO Load Factor Design and Load Resistance Factor Design specifications are also reviewed, as applied to actual straight, skewed, and curved bridges. In the future, classification of bridge categories will be performance-based, with emphasis placed on pushover analysis, ductility, use of new soil site factors, liquefaction effects, and loss of bearing capacity during seismic events. The proposed changes recommended by Report 472 that differ from current AASHTO seismic specifications are also discussed.
