ROUGHNESS MEASUREMENT BY SLIDING STRAIGHT EDGE AND BUMP INTEGRATOR DEVICES

VIAGRAF OG BUMPMETER SAMMENLIGNING AF MALERESULTATER

The present report contains a description of two devices used for measuring the evenness of pavement surfaces, the "Viagraf" (a 5 m sliding straightedge) and the Bump Integrator. The relative response of each measuring device to surface irregularities in terms of wavelength is discussed. Comparative tests have been carried out. An irregularity index as measured with the Viagraf is derived from the number and magnitude of irregularities indicated by its counters. A significant correlation is shown between this irregularity index and that of the Bump Integrator. In connection with the internordic STINA project, a 15-man panel rated the present serviceabilities of 10 test sections. The mean of the individual ratings correlated well with the irregularity index from objective measurements made with the Viagraf and the Bump Integrator. /Author/
