FULL-SCALE MEASUREMENT OF WAVE LOADS AND STRUCTURAL RESPONSE OF LARGE ORE CARRIERS
This Report includes an English summary, and the text of all the tables, graphs, and diagrams is in English. The work reported has consisted mainly of full-scale measurement, on ore and bulk carriers, of ocean waves, wave pressures on the hull, and wave bending-moments, and is divided into two categories: "incorporated" and "automatic" measurements. The incorporated measurements were carried out as part of joint research by the Panel (SR-124) issuing the Report and other Panels; the measurements were made during a number of voyages of a 117,570-dwt ore carrier on the Japan--Australia route between 1970 and 1974. Ocean waves were measured with throw-away buoys and FM telemetering, the simultaneous measurement of waves and ship response being the first carried out by Japan on such a scale. The analysis has not yet been completed, but some gratifying results have been obtained. The Report includes some results of measurements and analysis of short-term distribution of ship response, frequency distribution of r.m.s. values, impactive and non-impactive wave pressures on the hull, spectral correlations of response, and pressures by the ore cargo. The automatic measurements, which covered the period December 1971 to February 1975, were undertaken, on ore carriers and bulk carriers ranging in deadweight from 57,900 too 164,600 tonnes and on a 35,400-dwt containership, to obtain statistical data on ship response continuously over a long term (about 2 to 3 years) in each of the ships; the data on environmental conditions were mostly visual. In three of the ships, r.m.s. values of ship response were very successfully recorded as digital prints by automatic r.m.s. recorders; in a second group of four ships, response was recorded by automatic analogue data recorders on magnetic tape, with less success. Results from both groups of ships are presented and discussed. Order from: BSRA as No. 47,474.
