The progress to date is reported of a project to build a computer-based aggregate aspatial simulation model of the economy of the Northern Region of England. The region is modelled as a point economy but the principal variables are disaggregated as follows: population (by sex and age groups with corresponding migration and participation rated); final demand (made up to consumer expenditure, public expenditure, investment, stock, net exports); and industrial sectors. The model illustrates a System Dynamics application with the system described in terms of levels/stocks and flows/rates. The system behavior is captured through the integration of rates over time. Short-term decisions as to expected demand are translated into long-term changes in levels of population, industrial capital, and competitiveness. The development of the model has involved using interactive computing facilities with access to the program primarily through visual display units which permit instant program changes, and enable the testing of wide ranges of parameter values in very short periods of time.
