MOTORCYCLE SAFETY - ACCIDENT SURVEY AND RIDER INJURIES

The transport and Road Research Laboratory has, since 1973, been investigating rider trajectories in frontal collisions as part of its overall motorcycle safety programme. This impact configuration was chosen after the results of a small survey undertaken in 1972, showed that this was the most common direction of impact. The present study confirms these findings. In 483 accident studies the riders and their motorcycles, the accident situation, the relation to national data, injuries and causes, injury pattern, factors affecting severity of injury and the use of safety helmets are reviewed and the results are discussed. /TRRL/
