DRIVER DETECTION OF PEDESTRIANS ON SPECIALLY ILLUMINATED CROSSWALKS

This paper describes the photometrics, both before and after installation of a specialized illumination system, and reports on the results obtained when eight test subjects were employed to determine the improvement in detection provided by the illumination of a pedestrian-like target on the crosswalk. The conclusions of this experiment were that threshold detection improved by almost 140% by the use of the specialized illumination system. With no special illumination, the recognition threshold was 245 ft. With special illumination, the recognition threshold was 587 ft. /Author/TRRL/
