HARDWARE FOR VISUAL OUTPUT AND INTERACTION

Examples of displays using different modes of operation are shown, and the evolution is described of different display types from a few basic systems, namely the high performance free vector drawing display, the constrained format alphanumeric display, television techniques, soft copy methods such as storage tube, hard-copy, and solid state displays. High performance graphics are briefly discussed, and low cost graphics categorized into 2 classes, namely minicomputer graphics and hardware graphics, are detailed. Visual display units, Raster Scan (symoblic graphics) and television displays are covered. Details are also given of scan converters, eraseable stores, DVST, cathodochromic tubes, photochromic displays, lithcon, and mechanical displays. Solid state (plasma displays, LED's, electroluminescence, liquid crystals, electrophoresus, electrochromics) and interactive techniques are also reviewed.
