SOME BEHAVIOURAL ASPECTS OF THE ROUTE CHOICE PROBLEM

GEDRAGSRELATIES IN DE ROUTEKEUZEPROBLEMATIEK, ENIGE KANTTEKENINGEN

Methods of multiple route choice and assignment treat route choice in two separate stages: the definition of (relevant) routes and the evaluation of these routes. As this distinction has no behavioural aspects, but results from the wish to make full use of the computer programs, the decision rules in both cases should be consistent, because of being parts of the same route choice behaviour. This however is generally not so, as is illustrated by some examples. Further a hypothesis is recommended to be taken into account explicitly when describing route choice behaviour mathematically: a route will not be chosen, if no specified attribute is considered by an individual to be more attractive than that of another route and at least one attribute less attractive. /TRRL/
