THE USE OF ILLUMINATED BOLLARDS IN IMPROVING HIGHWAY SAFETY
This article offers a guide to the use of illuminated bollards in pedestrian refuges and traffic calming schemes. Lighting is provided by a ground-mounted illuminated base assembly: the flexible plastic top can be deformed or even removed by a collision while leaving the base intact. Central refuges reduce risk in crossing the road by enabling the pedestrian to cross one carriageway at a time. They can be up to 3m wide although in this wider case the illuminated bollards are staggered towards the kerb line in order not to mislead drivers. Hatched carriageway markings can be used between refuges to give the impression that the carriageway has narrowed. Illuminated bollards can also be used in traffic calming schemes, including gateways, chicanes, mini-islands and pinch points, together with appropriate carriageway markings and building out the side kerb. All these techniques require signing and lining in accordance with regulations, in order to enhance safety for all road users. The illuminated bollard plays a very important role in ensuring that routes through these safety measures are clearly defined.
