OCEAN BUILDER 1 PIPE-LAY SHIP PUT TO WORK

Ocean Builder 1, the former 38,000-ton, ore-oil tanker Santos, has been put to work in the North Sea as a derrick-crane, pipe-laying vessel. The conversion of the tanker and the operation of the modified vessel are described. As it is outfitted now, the vessel can be used to lay submarine pipelines up to 48 in. in diameter. In addition, it can be used to install jackets, deck sections, modules, and auxiliary equipment for oil and gas production.
