ASPECTS OF PARTNER PROTECTION IN TRUCK DESIGN

The paper describes the most important ways of protecting other road users, consideration being given to both the relative frequency of accidents and to their consequences. The greatest significance in this context is accorded to the front underride guard, for which to date no regulations have come into force. This paper describes the layout, engineering design, simulation and results of testing for such an energy-absorbing front underride protection system. The second most important area of heavy trucks in this respect is the rear. For the accident opponent the stated regulations do not lead to a level of protection that would be possible if state-of-the-art technology were used. Finally the side area is, despite prevailing regulations that have, however, not been fully implemented, capable of considerable improvement with regard to the avoidable consequences of accidents.
