SONGSU BRIDGE, WIDENING OF AN EXISTING MULTI-SPAN TRUSS BRIDGE
As traffic density and vehicle weights rise many key bridges in the most heavily congested cities are found to be in need of widening and strengthening. The technical challenges for designers and contractors working on these schemes include maintaining traffic flow through construction, building onto existing structures that may already be heavily loaded and planning of erection sequences to acquire the required state of stress and profile in the widened structure. This paper describes the widening of Songsu Bridge, an example of where these criteria are major factors influencing the design solution.
