A RENAISSANCE FOR SURFACE DRESSING

RENAESSANS FOER YTBEHANDLING

Owing to substantial improvements to asphalt spreaders, surface dressing is being used increasingly. Tanks are larger; 2 gangs with 10 cu M tanks and self-propelled gravel spreaders can consistently apply over 60000 litres of binder per day. Heating takes place at about 0.5 degrees c/minute. Spreader accuracy is usually within plus or minus 10%, and by using a hydrostatic transmission between vehicle engine and the spreader, the previous difficulties due to the wrong travelling speed have been eliminated. Noise, vibration and exhaust gases have been eliminated by introduction of the hydrostatic transmission; a programming unit has replaced the previous array of valves and levers; a desired number of spreader valves can be operated individually from the platform. Increasing use of emulsion instead of cut-back bitumens has reduced the risk due to binder vapour. Self-propelled gravel spreaders make possible a higher rate of working since no stops are necessary when delivery lorries are changed round; the quality is better since application is continuous; there is a saving of 5% in gravel. /TRRL/
