THE POZZOLAN CHARACTERISTICS OF BASALT

MISE EN EVIDENCE DES PROPRIETES, POUZZOLANIQUES DES BASALTES

After presenting geological, physical and chemical data on basalt, the authors deal with the following: (1) stabilization with pozzolan-lime binders. A comparative study of the stabilization of basalt and gneiss shows the pozzolanic characteristics of basalt; (2) study of basalt-lime binders. The curves of evolution in the simple compression strength of basalt/lime binder samples and pozzolan/lime binder samples show the superiority of basalt/lime binder over pozzolan/lime binder. Furthermore A marked increase in the time of dry density of basalt/lime samples was observed; (3) stabilization of basaltic gravel with lime. The comparative evolution in compressive strength as a function of curing time shows that a mixture of basalt with 4% hydrated lime gives markedly better results than those obtained by treating basalt with highly reactive pozzolan and 3% hydrated lime. The shape of the evolution curves shows that there exists no particular kinetic difference whether pozzolan is present or not. /TRRL/
