CONTRIBUTION OF THE PERKINS GROUP TO THE PREVENTION OF TRAFFIC NUISANCE

CONTRIBUTION DU GROUPE PERKINS A LA LUTTE CONTRE LES NUISANCES

This article outlines the possible implications of new regulations regarding the fast diesel engine and describes the developments carried out to meet these regulations. Within the next ten years, it is envisaged that a marked reduction in the noise level, the opacity of the exhaust fumes and their smell should be achieved in most European countries. It is also considered inevitable that legislation in North America will continue to require the strict control of the emission of hydrogen oxides and hydrocarbon in spite of an increase in fuel consumption. New steps must be taken to ensure the use of diesel engine in the near future, one of these steps being the squish lip perkins combustion system. Results obtained up to now are described, and the implications of the energy crisis are discussed. /TRRL/
