EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE FACTORS AFFECTING THE TEMPERATURE OF PAVEMENT LAYERS, AND OF THERMAL PROPAGATION IN A ROAD SUPERSTRUCTURE

STUDIO SUPERIMENTALE SUI FATTORI INFLUENZANTI LA TEMPERATURA DEL MANTI E SULLA PROPAGAZIONE TERMICA IN UNA SOVRASTRUTTURA STRADALE

The study described aims at defining the behaviour of road pavements in relation to the thermal stresses to which they are subjected. Thermal energy radiated from the sun is absorbed through the surface and transmitted to the other layers. Since the layers are not homogeneous one to the other, the heat transmitted varies with reference to thermal inertia and to the various heat transfer factors. Details are given of measurements carried out on a section of highway in service, to determine the parameters which define thermal effects. Results show a rapid reduction of heat transfer in relation to pavement depth. Heat loss coefficients for the various layers are given. /TRRL/
