This paper is a broad digest of current practice in flexible road construction in western European countries and Scandinavia. National road systems, flexible road design and construction techniques are summarised. Important differences in design and construction methods in the various countries are highlighted. Trends in the use of bitumens, asphalt mixes and surface treatments are described and factors influencing future developments such as road surface properties, conservation of resources and pollution control are discussed. The moves towards design methods for asphaltic mixes, more rational pavement design methods and better construction techniques in relation to compaction, are seen to be the solution to achieving greater durability for road pavements at the lowest possible cost.(a) /TRRL/
