AUTOMATIC PLOTTING RADARS: A COMPARISON OF FACILITIES ON COMPUTER BASED RADAR

This study was planned to examine the reaction of a typical sample of seafarers when confronted with some collision-avoidance radar facilities. In the analysis a number of areas were assessed for each man. These were a work-load factor, accuracy, the alteration of speed or course and, in addition, an assessment of relative-motion/true-motion usage. It was concluded that these systems reduce the work load dramatically if it is an auto-acquisition system and slightly if it is a manual acquisition system. The accuracy of interpretation always increases. Descriptions of the facilities and details of the results of the study are provided.
