NEW APPLICATION OF ACOUSTICAL TRACKING SYSTEM YIELDS EXTENDED CAPABILITIES
The RS-7 Digital Acoustic Position Indicator has been in use for some time on drilling vessels as a position indicator for re-entry functions and as a control input source to command dynamic vessel position (DP) systems. It also has the capability of providing riser angle and riser/BOP stack differential angle information and is finding increasing utilization in these roles. The Diff-2 option extends the capability of the RS-7 series to permit the system to accurately measure, and simultaneously display with a common range, the position of a surface vessel, a fixed ocean floor reference and a variable depth submersible, without sacrificing the performance and features of the basic system. This will allow the surface vessel to operate in a known positional relationship to the sumbersible thus preventing its being fouled or pulled off its intended course or location by its tether cable to the ship. A description of the system and its operation is given.
