TWO NEW MICRO-BRIDGE TARIFFS AT FMC SHOW SEPARATE RAIL/OCEAN DIVISIONS
Micro-bridge connects interior rail, truck, or barge terminals with foreign points via routings with the fewest total miles. Two new micro-bridge tariffs use different pricing techniques in applying combination rates. In one tariff, separately figured rail and ocean divisions are added together, and competitive advantages are gained by the exploitation of volume discounts. Another tariff figures inland and ocean divisions on a flat percentage rate for exports to the Middle East. Micro-bridge is described, problems are examined, and examples are given. It is concluded that micro-bridge may lay the groundwork for evolution of true intermodal carriers, quoting through rates, assuming sole legal liability for cargo handling, and taking control of a shipment from door to door.
