DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW ARRANGEMENT OF TWIN SCREW PROPELLERS WITH A SINGLE RUDDER FOR HIGH BLOCK COEFFICIENT SHIPS

Recently, it has become common to adopt twin rudders for high block coefficient ships with twin screw propellers. However the larger size of twin rudders impairs the propulsive performance especially due to the increase of thrust deduction fraction. This may result in the propulsive performance of a ship with twin screws and twin rudders being somewhat inferior to that of a single screw ship. On the other hand from the view point of maneuverability it becomes very hard to adopt the arrangement with twin screw propellers and a single rudder for such a ship as the size and the block coefficient become larger. The new arrangement of twin screw propellers with a single rudder, where the tip clearance between the propellers is smaller than the maximum thickness of the rudder, is a compromise between the above two types. According to the results of tests the new arrangement provides good propulsive performance and tolerable manoeuverability, and is free from vibration and cavitation erosion of propellers. It is comparable with the overlapping propeller arrangement or even superior to it for easiness of its practical application.
