SIMRAD--NORWEGIAN FRONT RUNNER IN THE INTELLIGENCE INDUSTRY

Simrad, the marine electronics concern, is building a new department devoted to offshore projects, where it plans to make use of its accumulated knowledge of marine electronics to develop new markets. One of the newest product packages to be developed for the offshore market is a hydro-acoustic position reference (HPR), which can be used to locate drilling holes for re-entry operations, pipelaying work, diving operations, and equipment installations. These transmit a reply when they receive a correctly pulsed/coded signal. A splitbeam transducer reforms a highly accurate phase measurement of the received signal, and a computer converts the phase angle to the geometric angle of the transponder. The position of the transponder is presented on a CRT display along with angular information. Two such systems will become part of the complete dynamic positioning system for the H-3 drilling rig, order by Stolt Nielsen & Co. from Rauma-Rapola, Finland.
