STREET CLEANING EFFECTIVENESS: VACUUM SWEEPERS
Tests show that in normal city operations overall removal effectiveness of the dirt and debris fraction of street refuse by mechanical sweeping is between 11 and 62 percent. The removal effectiveness on the five particle sizes (less than 43 microns) is highly ineffective. A synthetic type of street debris was developed and evaluation tests were conducted using an Ecolotec Mark 14 Vacu-sweep. Three different simulant loadings were tested and the results showed that at any sweeping speed from 1 mph to 6 mph, overall dirt removal effectiveness over the test area was at least over 90 percent. The removal of fine particles (less than 43 microns) exceeded 75 percent in all cases and could be as high as 90 percent with heavier dirt loadings.
