A summary is provided of two reports which highlight the hidden factors in assessing the causes and costing of the effects of accidents and damage within the port complex. The first is an evaluation of the human factors involved with the operation of container gantry cranes. The key feature was the restricted visibility of the operator perched high in the cab, and this became the central feature of the study, leading to a suggested redesign of the cab. The major findings of the second study, which deals with actual costs of accidents, confirmed its early assumptions including the fact that the cost of an accident varies according to the degree of mechanization and the type of technology. Comparison is made of accident costs between conventional, ro-ro, and container berths.
