SHIP ACCESS - THE KEY TO FAST TURN ROUND
Improvements are described in equipment for rolling cargo into, and about, a vessel emphasizing rapid cargo handling and maximum utilization of cargo space. For transferring cargo to and from a series of decks on ro-ro vessels, equipment manufacturers provide fixed, folding (hoistable), ramps, or lifts. The development of the stern-angled (quarter) ramp has enabled ships to berth alongside any conventional wharf. Unlike the fixed angle ramp, the slewing ramp is designed to offer berthing possibilities on port and starboard, or across the stern enabling ships to berth in remote areas with only one berthing position. Examples and discussions of both types of external ramps are provided. Financial considerations in selecting ramps and lifts for vessels of various sizes and requirements are provided.
