PRACTICAL GUIDELINES FOR SPREADER DESIGN

Shortcomings in the design and/or construction of various types of spreader beam used in ports are identified and remedial measures already taken to rectify these shortcomings are reported. Based on an analysis of the common defects in existing spreaders, the general aims to be sought for a telescopic spreader suitable for a large high-speed ship to shore gantry crane operation are formulated.
