FINLAND - BARGE SYSTEMS A SERIOUS OPTION?
In order to achieve economies of scale for the Finnish forestry industry, a number of changes have been suggested in the water transportation of forest products. Recommendations are made to concentrate shipments between a smaller number of ports, and use larger cargo carrying capacity. The use of large ships as opposed to stowable and ferry ro-ros and small conventional ships now being used is evaluated. A proposal for using barge systems capable of handling a wind cargo mix and used on routes where there is a strong commodity flow is analyzed.
