STRESS ANALYSIS PROGRAM FOR SUBMARINE PIPES DURING LAYING OPERATION

To meet with an increasing demand for oil, much improvement and new developments are being made when building offshore structures of all types for ocean drilling in deeper seas under severe weather conditions. This trend has, in turn, necessitated the development of a new method for laying larger diameter pipes in the seas. A suitable combination of stinger and tensioning devices is indispensable for the pipe laying operation, which indicates the need for a very exact method of analyzing the stress in the pipes during the laying operation. A computer program system has been developed to solve the non-linear problems of stiffened catenary under various loads caused by currents, waves and the motion of the pipe laying barges and to obtain useful data for the design of the barges with intended functions. This paper presents an outline of the theory and program system together with some results of stress analysis imposed on the pipe of 400 foot long laying barge with a floating type stinger and tensioning devices.
